This St Patrick’s Day the Grand Social will host a celebration of Celtic Music featuring Macushla (Ireland) with special guests Falperrys (Galicia) and Whistle (Mars).
Macushla trade in raw, energetic folk/rock with Dublin songwriter Brian Brody (The Pale/Black Cabaret) at the helm on vocals and acoustic guitar. Brian is renowned on the Dublin pub scene and beyond for his roof-raising sets of trad, folk and rock covers, and vows to ìpush each performance to the next levelî for Macushlaís epic renditions of Irish classics ñ as befits the night thatís in it, evoking the spirit of The Pogues, Luke Kelly and Planxty. Their original compositions interweave Celtic mythology with heartfelt personal stories and acoustic flourish, as in-demand uilleann piper&concertina player Tara Finn adds haunting strains to the bluegrass-steeped rhythms of bassist Andy Slowey and the dynamic percussion power of Al Cowan (Paranoid Visions/Caliban).
Falperrys are a six-piece punk-folk group hailing from Galicia in the Spanish northwest. They describe their particular style as the ìhouse band at the Tavern of Lost Soulsî, mixing traditional Irish tunes with the folklore of their region, including lyrics in Gallego, the Galician Language. Expert troubadours of the local music scene, members are drawn from a variety of very established punk and rock bands and have played numerous venues and festivals around Europe since their formation in 2010, including as special guests of the St Pauli football team in Hamburg. Falperrys are Manolo on accordian, Jose on guitar, David on mandolin/banjo, Mikele on bass, Manu on drums and Esteban (formerly of Spanish punk faves Skacha) on vocals.
Whistle are an out-of-this-world experience ñ a six-piece bluegrass band with fine multi-part harmonies, good old harmonica-soaked Americana and shades of Tom Waits and Neil Young. They feature Jerome Corby (vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica), Des Walsh (vocals, guitars), Carl Lombard (vocals, banjo, guitar, accordion, harmonica), Brian McGuinness (percussion), Andy Slowey (bass) and Enid Conoghan (violin). Get down early on St Patrickís evening to catch all these incredibly talented musicians ñ each band has their distinct flavour but all know how to make sure the craic is mighty.
